Glass tombstones
What glass strength to choose and why?
The very first thing to note is that the base is always clear glass, and its thickness has no bearing on its resistance to weathering or other chemicals. If you are installing glass using point fixings or screws, the general rule is that a hole can be drilled in the glass that is equal to or greater than the thickness of the glass (e.g. glass thickness 6 mm - hole diameter 6 mm or greater). Another case where the thickness of the glass is important is the type of installation where the headstone is self-supporting, installed in a similar way to, say, a glass balustrade. It depends on the size and height of the slab, but we generally recommend the larger glass thicknesses of 10 and 12 mm. Glass in this thickness can withstand really big impacts in the area and looks solid, which goes beautifully with solid stone slabs. So for smaller slabs, the glass thickness is mainly a design issue, as the price is the same in our shop for all glass thicknesses. All glass (except frosted glass on lanterns) is extractive without the green tint that is caused by high iron content. This guarantees beautiful undistorted colours even in light shades. Our glass processing standard is at the highest possible level, i.e. CNC, which guarantees us above all precision and constant quality of glass processing, but also a wide range of shapes, milled holes in the surface or even in the edge.
